Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is a progress; working together is success”, while Helen Keller uttered the line, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”. Both inspirational quotes pertain to one important concept – teamwork. To achieve teamwork, both the team leaders and their members should do their part. If any of the parties fails to deliver on their list of doables, then the team is likely to be unsuccessful in its endeavour.

Leadership is among the most essential skills that a person can ever learn. This is because leadership is applicable to all areas of life including your personal life, family, work environment and also business. Because of this, it is accurate to conclude that leadership development is a continuing process that takes place throughout an individual’s life. In fact, there is no point when it stops. There are many situations and possibilities which an individual can seize to enhance their leadership skills. Quite possibly the most important thing to keep in mind is the fact that leadership, in a lot of situations, requires dealing with other people. Here is a basic leadership development process.

Leadership is considered the ability to organize and have an influence on other people to achieve a specific common purpose. Leaders arise from inside of organizations. Their personal characteristics bring in followers who willingly consent to their leadership. For decades it was assumed that leadership was a characteristic that was inherited. Nevertheless, later studies and research have shown that effective leadership can be taught and developed with leadership training.

Do you know what a leader is? I am sure that you have heard many different answers to this question. Here’s mine. I believe that everyone has the potential and the capacity to be a leader within them. In order for a person to truly live their life purpose and do what they were sent here to Earth to do, they at some point in their life need to find that leader within them and let it step forth and shine to the world. When I talk about stepping it up in your life this is the exact stuff that I am talking about-stepping forth in your brilliance.

This past weekend I attended my 10 year reunion at the U.S. Naval Academy. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I graduated. I’m definitely starting to feel old. There’s a saying I recall from my days as a midshipman- “The Naval Academy is a great place to be from, but not a great place to be at”. That’s so true. My time there was extremely challenging. I was constantly in “survival mode” attempting to make it to another day. I made it and now I’m “from” there which is definitely better. One of the goals I set for the weekend- yes I even set goals on the weekend : ) was to nail down the most important leadership lesson I learned at the Academy so that I could share it with you. So, after taking a walk around the yard with my wife, enjoying a few beers with my friends, and eating some Maryland crab cakes, here is the lesson that I wish to share with you -
